More and more consumers in the UK are shying away from sausages and bacon believing them to be a high health risk. Instead, people are choosing plant-based options.

Sales of sausages in the UK are in decline at a time when the plant-based food market is going from strength to strength.

Research from the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) highlighted that 29 percent of households are eating less sausage.

“Health perceptions around sausages…are struggling” the AHDB announced.

“64{85424e366b324f7465dc80d56c21055464082cc00b76c51558805a981c8fcd63} of consumers think that sausages are fattier than other types of meat and there has been an increase in the number of consumers who link them with heart disease, high blood pressure and cancer.”

Sales of bacon have also shown a similar downwards trend, with a 5.3 percent drop in sales in the last year. This equates to 8,500 tonnes of bacon.

The report from the AHDB suggests that a good solution could be to “Inspire older, health-conscious consumers with healthier bacon meals such as salads.”
