According to recent data from event booking platform Togather, requests for vegan options at UK events has skyrocketed since 2019.

Estimates indicate that in 2024, approximately 2.5 million people (equating to 4.7% of the adult population) identify as vegan in the UK. This represents a continued increase from previous years, where estimates were between 2-4%. So it’s no surprise that requests for vegan options at weddings, conferences and Christmas parties have also risen.

Vegan options at UK events

In 2020, only 6.6% of event food requests were vegan. By 2021, that figure rose to 24% and since 2022, approximately 25% of food requests have consistently been vegan.

This steady increase in demand points to a lasting commitment to plant-based eating, driven by increased awareness of the benefits of a vegan diet and the impact of meat, fish and dairy on health, the environment and animals.

Festive season sees spike in vegan interest

As Christmas approaches, the demand for vegan-friendly options is expected to influence Christmas parties and gatherings.

Searches for vegan Christmas recipes have gone up 108% so far in November. Tesco’s Annual Christmas Report supports this trend, revealing that 25% of British households will host guests who follow vegan (6%), vegetarian (14%), or plant-based (5%) diets this year.

This shift reflects a broader change in attitudes, with vegan options becoming an essential addition to restaurant and event menus.

The rise of veganism in the UK

Mainstream influencers, chefs and vegan celebrities such as Formula 1 racing driver Lewis Hamilton and Deliciously Ella founder Ella Mills, have helped educate the general population on the benefits of veganism.

Innovations in technology have also led to the creation of hyper-realistic plant-based meats including vegan steak, making it easier for people to make the switch.

According to the research by Togather, the younger generation is leading the way in the UK, with 26% of Gen Z adults planning to avoid meat in 2024 and another 26% already following a meat-free lifestyle.
