A new report about the main commercial food trends predicted to dominate 2025 has concluded that the plant-based and vegan sectors are at the heart of a food revolution driven by sustainability, health, and technological innovation.
The report, titled, “FoodTech trends in 2025,” was compiled by DigitalFoodLab, founded by Matthieu Vincent and Jérémie Prouteau, two French food technology entrepreneurs with more than ten years of experience in the sector. The 2025 issue is the sixth edition of the report on trends shaping the future of food. Each year, DigitalFoodLab gathers its knowledge on innovation all along the food value chain, from seeds to food products to grocery stores to health.
The report outlines six megatrends for 2025, three of which are particularly significant for the plant-based industry: sustainable ingredients, resilient farms, and food as medicine. The research highlights how sustainable agriculture is critical to the future of plant-based food, with technologies such as precision farming and farm robotics making farms more efficient, while bioinputs are providing environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional fertilisers and pesticides.
The authors state, “Innovation is coming from researchers and large corporations and, above all, from startups. Indeed, the entrepreneurial mindset is more agile and enables more risky ventures. While the food industry was long regarded as not disruptive enough for venture capital investments, things have changed. Even in the current context of tech investments decline, agriculture and food startups are getting heavily funded to reinvent how we grow food, shop and cook it. Compared to last year’s edition, even if we added new trends that emerged during the year, the global evolution is less dramatic than it was previously. This is a visible consequence of the current lack of appetite of investors (and somewhat of large companies) to invest in long-term and unproven trends.”
