Brits are going meat-free claims new research which found the number of vegans in the UK grew by 62{85424e366b324f7465dc80d56c21055464082cc00b76c51558805a981c8fcd63} in 2019.
According to shopping comparison website, finder.com, 12 million Brits (23{85424e366b324f7465dc80d56c21055464082cc00b76c51558805a981c8fcd63} of the population) say that they will be vegetarian, vegan or pescatarian by 2021, with the number of people claiming to be vegan soaring by 62{85424e366b324f7465dc80d56c21055464082cc00b76c51558805a981c8fcd63} in 2019.
The research revealed that 419,000 adopted a vegan lifestyle over the past 12 months, taking the total number of vegans in the UK to an estimated 1.1 million. Encouragingly, it also says its research reveals that over a million people intend to become vegan over the next 12 months.
The Vegan Society has also conducted research to discover how many vegans are currently living in the UK, and found that the number of vegans in Great Britain quadrupled between 2014 and 2019. In 2019, it suggested that there were 600,000 vegans, or 1.16{85424e366b324f7465dc80d56c21055464082cc00b76c51558805a981c8fcd63} of the population.
Commenting on the findings, Georgia-Rose Johnson, shopping and travel specialist at finder.com, told Vegan Food & Living: “Although a lot of people seem to have struggled to make the permanent switch to a meat-free diet over the past 12 months, this year’s findings echo our previous research in showing that adopting a veggie diet is a high priority for the UK.
“Meat-free diets and being ‘flexitarian’ are getting more media exposure than ever so you would expect these positive trends to continue growing.”
