Billie Eilish defended her vegan beliefs online after backlash over comments condemning meat consumption and animal cruelty.
Billie Eilish has urged fans and critics to “stop living a lie” following backlash against her ‘controversial’ take on meat-eaters’ ethics.
For over a decade, the artist has used her platform to advocate for those without a voice, frequently sparking intense public debate in the process.
During a recent video interview with Elle, Eilish was asked to name a ‘hill she would die on’. Anticipating a strong reaction, she prefaced her answer by saying, “Y’all ain’t gonna like me for this one,” before stating her firm belief that “eating meat is inherently wrong.”
The comment ignited a firestorm on social media, with critics raising concerns about privilege and food access. However, Eilish remained convicted, doubling-down on her statement while responding to the backlash on Instagram, where she reaches over 124 million followers.
Standing up for living beings
In a statement posted to her Instagram stories, Billie Eilish expressed her frustration with how “standing up for/having empathy for living beings” is seen as “controversial.”
The singer-songwriter urged her audience to watch documentaries on the subject, suggesting that those who find the footage difficult to watch should “take a look at” themselves. Along with the damning statement, she shared graphic footage from slaughterhouses to illustrate her point.
Eilish also made it clear that she’s “so tired” of dealing with anti-vegan sentiments, with a biting closing remark aimed at those who won’t reflect on their habits: “pls continue to live in a constant state of cognitive dissonance and denial and try to convince urself that ur not living a lie.”
Billie Eilish and animal activism
This is far from the first time Eilish has used her influence to challenge the status quo. In 2021, she famously negotiated with Oscar de la Renta, agreeing to wear their gown to the Met Gala only after the fashion house committed to a permanent ban on fur sales.
Speaking to The New York Times at the time, she noted it was “shocking that wearing fur isn’t completely outlawed,” and expressed her pride in being a “catalyst” for such a significant shift in the industry.
Beyond fashion, she has consistently supported grassroots advocacy. Alongside her brother, Finneas, she has participated in events for Farm Sanctuary, the first organisation of its kind in the US. By consistently bridging the gap between mainstream pop culture and animal rights, Eilish continues to force a global conversation on whether one can truly claim to love animals while they remain on the dinner plate.
