It’s true: When you eat well, you feel good! There’s no nutritional need for humans to consume other animals. All our dietary requirements—even as infants and children—are best supplied by vegan foods. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics notes that eating vegan reduces the risk of developing many chronic degenerative diseases and conditions, including heart disease, cancer, obesity, hypertension, and diabetes.
Cardiovascular disease is the number one health problem in the U.S., accounting for nearly 1 million heart attacks annually and 2,300 deaths each day. Because we now know what causes heart attacks, we can try to prevent them. In many studies, researchers have found that higher levels of cholesterol are linked to a greater risk of heart attack. For every 1% reduction in LDL cholesterol level, the risk of heart disease drops by 1%.
One of the largest studies on lifestyle and health found that the chances of dying from cardiovascular disease were significantly less for vegans than nonvegans, especially men. Plant-based foods contain no cholesterol, whereas meat, eggs, and dairy contain large amounts of cholesterol and saturated fat. Also, the high fiber content of vegan foods helps “wash away” excess cholesterol in the digestive tract—while meat, eggs, and dairy are devoid of fiber.
One of the primary recommendations in the American Cancer Society’s “Guidelines on Nutrition and Physical Activity for Cancer Prevention” is to eat a diet “with an emphasis on plant food.” Researchers have found that vegans are up to 50% less likely than meat-eaters to suffer from some forms of cancer.
