Undercover footage reveals brutal abuse of lambs at Denver’s Superior Farms, contradicting claims of humane practices.
A new undercover investigation by the animal rights group Direct Action Everywhere has exposed how animals are treated at a lamb slaughterhouse from Superior Farms in Denver, Colorado, US. The group planted hidden cameras across the facility. DxE said that the footage proved the meat producer has been lying to customers due to the company’s claims that its practices are “humane” and “Halal certified.” Superior Farms is the largest industrial lamb slaughterhouse in the US.
The video footage released contained graphic images of lambs getting kicked and hit with paddles, slammed to the floor of the slaughterhouse, and gasping for breath. The investigators claim also to have found workers luring young sheep to the killing floor, by using a trained sheep that gains lambs’ trust before they are killed.
Superior Farms has been the target of exposés before. Similar claims were also investigated at another of its facilities in Dixon, California.
The Animal Activist Legal Defense Project at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law represented the activists after the investigation was conducted.
After receiving over 31,000 voter signatures in 2023, the City of Denver announced that two pro-animal petitions containing sufficient valid signatures will be voted on this year’s ballot. One of them, Ordinance 309, would ban slaughterhouses within city limits — including the one referred to in this article. Phoenix Huber, spokesperson for Pro-Animal Future, said at the time, “It’s no longer a secret that Denver’s lamb slaughterhouse are in violation of the Clean Water Act. The slaughterhouse is a source of pollution in Globeville, an area of Denver already overwhelmed with industrial contamination. Many people we spoke with while petitioning felt concerned for the over 1,000 sheep per day who are killed there. Plus, the UN advises a more plant-based future to fight climate change. We should listen to the empathy that we feel for animals, and for the workers who are forced to kill baby lambs all day. By banning an unnecessary source of animal cruelty in our neighbourhoods, we can accelerate an evolution towards a greener and kinder modern economy.”
