These vegan mummy dogs need just two ingredients – vegan hot dogs and vegan puff pastry – and you can have a delicious, Halloween-friendly snack ready in minutes.

Kids are guaranteed to love them, and you might even find yourself reaching for one or two!

You’ll need:

8 vegan hot dogs
Store-bought puff pastry sheet (approx 250 grams)

For brushing, for a deeper golden colour (optional)
½ teaspoon maple syrup
½ teaspoon non-dairy milk
½ teaspoon avocado oil or any neutral oil

Here’s how:

  1. Place the hot dogs in boiling water and let them cook for five minutes. Remove to a plate lined with paper napkins or a rack to cool and dry.
  2. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Cut the puff pastry sheet into long, thin strips, about a centimeter wide.
  4. Wind the puff pastry strips around each hot dog, leaving some room near the “head” to make the eyes. There is no perfect skill to this, just have fun – it’s a great project to enlist your kids to help with.
  5. Place the hot dog mummies on a baking sheet. Brush on the optional maple-milk-oil mixture if using. Bake 20 minutes or until golden-brown and crispy. You might need less time if you use puff pastry sheets made with white flour. In that case start checking after about 12 minutes.
  6. Use vegan mayo or mustard to make tiny eyes on each mummy. Serve!
